Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do Band and Sports (or debate, robotics, science olympiad, etc.)?
Of course!  If there is a conflict, the teachers are WONDERFUL about working things out if you communicate ahead of time.

Does band take a lot of time after school?
Not at all!  Almost everything takes place during the school day.  As a beginner, there are only five  after school events that we do in band - two dress rehearsals (3:00-4:30 in the CMS Band Room), two concerts (one in December and one in May), and instrument tryouts at the beginning of school where you find out what instrument you will play.

What if I don't know how to play an instrument?  What if I'm not good?
You will be in the exact same boat as everyone else in your class!  We are all bad when we first learn a  new skill, but Mrs. Saunders and Mr. Murphy will teach you everything you need to know to be successful in band.

What instrument will I play?
We will have a night at the beginning of the school year in the CMS Band Room for you to try out all of the instruments to help you with your decision.  Not everyone is best suited for every instrument, so it is always good to know your strengths before making a decision.

How do I get an instrument?
We will have a music store set up in the band room during instrument try out night.  You can buy or rent new and used instruments from them as well as pick up everything you need for band.  The band also has a few of the more expensive instruments (tubas, baritones, and french horns) that you can rent from the school.  If you choose to acquire an instrument from somewhere else, please talk to Mrs. Saunders before you buy anything.  There are some poor quality instruments on the market that music stores can't repair and you don't want to be in that situation.

What If I already have an instrument?
Wow!  Bring it to Mrs. Saunders for her to look over it and make sure that is in good shape and a quality instrument.

How much does it cost to be in band?
Your most expensive year in band is the first one.  You will need to provide an instrument (usually less than $100/month), a band book (about $10), and anything else to make your instrument work such as reeds, oil, mouthpiece, etc. (usually $50 or less).  You will be able to use all of this equipment every year that you are in band!  Mrs. Saunders will not let money be the reason you don't do band.  If you have concerns, please talk to her.  There is almost always an agreeable solution to be found.
